History of our charity

Our charity came into being following the death of a young boy.

Richard Cooper had a rare disease which quickly led to increasing disability. Richard also developed cancer and had to endure frequent hospital admissions and intensive treatments with unpleasant side effects.

During the final weeks of his life both Richard and his mum wanted to avoid going back into a stressful hospital environment.

Through strength, determination and courage they achieved their wishes and on 13th March 1997, aged just 11, Richard died peacefully at home.

In 1998 our charity ‘The Richard Foundation’ was established to help families like Richard and his mum, who need care and support outside a hospital environment. In dedication to Richard 'The Richard Foundation' will always be our registered charity name.

After a lot of fundraising, and working with families in the community for two years, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice proudly opened its doors to children with life limiting and life threatening conditions on 19th September 2008.
